There is an hour that most people sleep through โ an hour that the Prophet ๏ทบ called the most precious time of the day for dua. An hour when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and personally asks: "Is there anyone asking that I may give to him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that I may forgive him?"
That hour is the last third of the night.
And the people who wake for it experience something that is genuinely difficult to describe โ a quality of closeness to Allah, a clarity of heart, a peace that does not come at any other time of day.
What Is Tahajjud?
Tahajjud is voluntary night prayer performed after sleeping and waking, preferably in the last third of the night before Fajr. It is also called Qiyam ul-Layl โ standing in the night.
It is not obligatory, but Allah praised it extensively in the Quran:
"And from the night, pray with it as additional worship for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." โ Surah Al-Isra (17:79)
A praised station โ Al-Maqam Al-Mahmud. The scholars say this refers to the highest station in Jannah that any human will reach โ the station of the Prophet ๏ทบ himself. And one of the roads to it is the night prayer.
The Hour Allah Descends
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Our Lord โ blessed and exalted โ descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and He says: Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?" โ (Bukhari, Muslim)
Think about this. At the moment most people are in their deepest sleep, Allah is personally, actively waiting to respond to whoever turns to Him. The question is not whether Allah is available in the last third of the night. The question is whether we are awake to ask.
How to Pray Tahajjud
The Minimum
Two rak'ahs is sufficient. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The night prayer is two by two." You set the intention, pray two rak'ahs, make dua, and go back to sleep if you wish. Two rak'ahs done consistently are worth infinitely more than twenty rak'ahs done occasionally.
The Recommended Amount
The Prophet ๏ทบ typically prayed 8 rak'ahs of Tahajjud plus 3 witr. But he also said: "Do not burden yourself with more than you can sustain." Start with 2. Build gradually.
What to Do After the Prayer
This is when the real treasure is. After your rak'ahs, sit and make dua. This is the most accepted time. Ask for everything. In your own language if needed. Pour out what is in your heart. The Prophet ๏ทบ said Allah is waiting to respond โ meet that waiting with sincerity.
How to Actually Wake Up
The most common obstacle is simply waking up. Some practical means:
Set an alarm for 30-45 minutes before Fajr. Make a sincere intention before sleeping โ the Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever intends to wake for night prayer and sleeps and misses it due to oversleeping will have the reward written for them anyway. โ (An-Nasa'i)
Sleep earlier. The Prophet ๏ทบ disliked sleeping before Isha and talking after it โ partly because early sleep makes early rising natural.
And make dua before sleeping that Allah wakes you. When you ask Allah to wake you for His worship, He often does.
What You Will Find
People who pray Tahajjud consistently describe a transformation that is difficult to explain to those who haven't experienced it. Days feel more blessed. Problems feel smaller. The connection to Allah that seems elusive during the day becomes tangible in those quiet pre-dawn hours.
Try it tonight. Set the alarm. Wake up. Pray two rak'ahs. Make one sincere dua. And see what Allah does with the rest of your day.
