Ramadan is not just a month of hunger. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained." โ (Bukhari & Muslim)
This hadith alone tells us Ramadan is a unique, almost supernatural opportunity. Everything that normally makes piety difficult is temporarily removed. The question is โ are we using this window?
Why We Fast โ Beyond Hunger
Allah says: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183)
The goal is taqwa โ God-consciousness. Hunger is the method, not the goal. When you are hungry, you become aware of your weakness and dependence on Allah. That awareness, extended through the whole month, is meant to restructure your relationship with Him permanently.
The Three Thirds of Ramadan
The Prophet ๏ทบ said Ramadan has three phases:
- First 10 days: Days of mercy โ seek Allah's mercy intensely
- Middle 10 days: Days of forgiveness โ focus on istighfar
- Last 10 days: Nights of liberation from Hellfire โ maximum worship, seek Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr โ Better than 1000 Months
Allah says: "The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." โ (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3)
One thousand months = 83 years. One night of sincere worship on Laylat al-Qadr is worth more than an entire lifetime of worship. It falls in the odd nights of the last 10 days โ most likely the 27th night, but worship all odd nights to be safe.
Daily Ramadan Schedule
- Suhoor (pre-dawn meal): Eat the barakah meal. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Eat suhoor, for there is barakah in suhoor." โ (Bukhari)
- Fajr: Pray in congregation when possible. Stay up with dhikr until sunrise.
- Morning: Quran reading โ aim for one juz (chapter) daily to complete the Quran in Ramadan
- Afternoon: Rest if needed. Avoid idle speech and arguments.
- Iftar: Break fast with dates and water, as the Sunnah. Pray Maghrib first before the full meal.
- Tarawih: Pray Tarawih โ even shortened โ consistently through the month.
- Night: Increase dua, Quran, and dhikr in the last hours before suhoor.
5 Things to Avoid That Ruin Ramadan Spirituality
1. Excessive eating at iftar โ defeats the spiritual purpose of hunger
2. Sleeping all day
3. Watching too much entertainment
4. Neglecting Tarawih
5. Arguing and backbiting โ the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "If someone fights with you, say: I am fasting."
