Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'By Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.'" — (Bukhari). In another narration: "I seek forgiveness of Allah a hundred times a day." — (Muslim)
Think about this carefully. The Prophet ﷺ — the one Allah told directly: "That Allah may forgive you your past and future sins" (48:2) — still made istighfar more than 100 times a day. He had nothing to confess. So why did he do it?
Because istighfar was never only about guilt. It is about proximity. Every time you say Astaghfirullah sincerely, you are returning to Allah — not just fleeing from sin, but moving toward Him. That is why the Prophet ﷺ made it his constant companion, not just a reaction to wrongdoing.
What Is Istighfar — And How Is It Different From Tawbah?
Istighfar means seeking forgiveness from Allah — the most common form is saying Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah). It can be said at any time, in any state, without special conditions.
Tawbah (repentance) is more specific — it requires: genuine regret for a sin, stopping the sin, and a firm resolution not to return to it. For major sins, tawbah is necessary. But istighfar is for everything: known sins, forgotten sins, shortcomings in worship, moments of heedlessness, and simply as a way of drawing closer to Allah even when you haven't committed anything specific.
The Prophet ﷺ used both — but his 100 daily instances were primarily istighfar, said as dhikr, as connection, as habit. This is the sunnah most people miss.
The Specific Sunnah After Every Salah
Thawban (RA) narrated that after finishing his prayer, the Prophet ﷺ would make istighfar three times, then say: "Allahumma Anta as-Salam wa minka as-Salam, tabarakta ya dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram." — (Muslim 591). Scholars have established that saying Astaghfirullah three times after every salah is one of the most consistent and authenticated sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ. Five prayers a day × 3 = 15 istighfar just from this practice alone. The remaining 85+ came throughout his day.

5 Life-Changing Benefits of Istighfar
1. It Removes Hardship and Opens Doors
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever makes istighfar regularly, Allah will provide him with relief from every worry, a way out of every difficulty, and will provide for him from sources he never imagined." — (Abu Dawud). Are you going through financial difficulty? Make istighfar. Struggling to find a spouse? Make istighfar. Feeling stuck in life? Make istighfar. This is not motivational language — it is a direct prophetic promise.
2. It Brings Rain and Rizq — Literally
