There is no relationship in Islam more sacred after our relationship with Allah than the one we have with our parents. The Quran mentions being good to parents immediately after the commandment to worship Allah alone โ not once, but multiple times.
"And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment." โ Surah Al-Isra (17:23)
Making dua for your parents is one of the greatest acts of love and one of the few deeds that continues to benefit them even after death.
The Quranic Dua for Parents
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
Meaning: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.
Dua for Parents Who Are Alive
Allahummaghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
Meaning: O Allah, forgive me and my parents and have mercy on them just as they raised me when I was small.
Dua for a Sick Parent
Allahumma Rabban-nas, adhhibil-ba's, ishfi antas-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama
Meaning: O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the harm, heal them โ for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.
Dua for Parents Who Have Passed Away
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." โ (Muslim)
If your parents have passed away, your dua for them is one of the greatest gifts you can still give them.
Allahummaghfir lahu warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin
Meaning: O Allah, forgive him/her and raise his/her rank among the rightly guided.
How to Honor Parents Beyond Dua
Dua is the most powerful thing you can do, but Islam also teaches us to honor parents through action: never raise your voice at them, serve them physically, give them gifts regularly, and give sadaqah on their behalf after they are gone โ the reward reaches them.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Paradise lies at the feet of your mother." โ (Nasa'i, authenticated). Make dua for them today. Right now. Allah is listening.
