There is no relationship in Islam more sacred after our relationship with Allah than the one we have with our parents. The Quran mentions being good to parents immediately after the commandment to worship Allah alone — not once, but multiple times, across multiple surahs. This repetition is deliberate.
"And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment." — Surah Al-Isra (17:23)
Making dua for your parents is one of the greatest acts of love — and one of the few deeds that continues to benefit them even after they have passed. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this: "When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." — (Muslim). That last phrase is about you, praying for them, right now. Your dua is one of the three things that keeps reaching your parents after death.
The Quranic Dua for Parents — The Primary Supplication
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
Meaning: My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.
Dua for Parents Who Are Alive — Forgiveness and Mercy
Allahummaghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
Meaning: O Allah, forgive me and my parents and have mercy on them just as they raised me when I was small.
Dua for a Sick Parent
Allahumma Rabban-nas, adhhibil-ba's, ishfi antas-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama
Meaning: O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the harm, heal them — for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.
Dua for Parents Who Have Passed Away
If your parents have passed away, your dua for them is one of the greatest gifts you can still give them. And it reaches them — the Prophet ﷺ confirmed this with something remarkable: a narration describes that when Allah raises a deceased parent's rank in Paradise through their child's dua, the parent asks: "O Lord, how did I receive this?" And the answer comes: "Through your child seeking forgiveness for you." — (Ahmad). Every time you make this dua, something is happening for your parent in their grave — right now.
Allahummaghfir lahu warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin
Meaning: O Allah, forgive him/her and raise his/her rank among the rightly guided.
The Dua of Prophet Nuh (AS) — For Parents and All Who Enter Your Home
Rabbi ighfir li wa liwalidayya wa liman dakhala baytiya mu'minan wa lilmu'mineena walmu'minat
Meaning: My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and believing women.
How to Honor Parents Beyond Dua
Dua is the most powerful thing you can do — but Islam also teaches honor through action: never raise your voice at them, serve them physically before they ask, give them gifts regularly, and give sadaqah on their behalf after they are gone —
