Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) said: "Whoever reads Tabarak Alladhi biyadihil Mulk (Surah Al-Mulk) every night, Allah will protect him from the punishment of the grave." — (Al-Hakim, authenticated)
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk every night before sleeping — consistently, without exception. He called Al-Mulk "Al-Mani'ah" — The Protector. And there is one narration, rarely discussed, that shows just how literally this protection works.
The Companion Who Heard Surah Al-Mulk From Inside a Grave
Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ pitched his tent on a piece of ground without realizing it was a grave. Suddenly, from beneath him, he heard a voice reciting Surah Al-Mulk — all the way to its completion. He went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is the defender. It is the deliverer — it delivers from the punishment of the grave." — (At-Tirmidhi: 2890)
This companion had not chosen a sacred spot. He had simply pitched his tent. Yet the surah was already at work, recited by the person in the grave, shielding them from within. This narration, more than any list of benefits, captures what Surah Al-Mulk actually does.
The Name and Theme
Al-Mulk means "The Sovereignty" or "The Kingdom." The surah opens with one of the most powerful statements in the Quran about Allah's absolute ownership and control of all existence. Its 30 verses cover three massive themes: Allah's sovereignty, death and accountability, and the blessings of creation as evidence of Allah's power. The Prophet ﷺ also called it "Al-Munjiyah" — The Saviour — because of its role as intercessor on the Day of Judgment.
Key Verses Explained
The Protection of the Grave — How It Works
Multiple hadiths describe Al-Mulk as a protector from the punishment of the grave. Scholars explain the mechanism: when the angels Munkar and Nakir approach the grave, Surah Al-Mulk intercedes — approaching from the direction of the feet, the chest, and the head — each time saying "There is no pathway for you from my direction, because he would recite Surah Al-Mulk." The surah, recited in life, becomes a companion and defender in death.
The Prophet ﷺ also said: "There is a surah in the Quran which contains thirty verses that will intercede for its reader until he is forgiven." — (At-Tirmidhi: 2891) This is not just protection from punishment — it is intercession for forgiveness. And all of this comes from an action that takes only 5-7 minutes each night.
Does Listening to Surah Al-Mulk Count?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions about this surah. The scholarly position, based on the hadiths, is that the virtue is specifically tied to recitation — actively reading or saying the words — rather than passively listening. If you cannot yet recite it from memory or follow along, the recommended alternative is to repeat after a recorded recitation, verse by verse, so that you are genuinely reciting rather than only listening. This way you receive the full reward of the practice, and over time you will have memorized it without realizing it.
How to Make It a Nightly Habit
- Read it from a mushaf (Quran) or a phone app after Isha prayer
- Aim to memorize it gradually — learn 3-4 verses each week
- Listen to a beautiful recitation while reading along — this combines listening and active recitation
- If memorized, recite it while lying in bed — this was the practice of many companions
- Place your Quran or phone open at Surah 67 on your bedside before you sleep — removing the friction of finding it in the moment makes consistency much easier
Getting Started Tonight
You do not need to memorize it to begin. Open your Quran app (try Quran.com or iQuran) and find Surah 67 — Al-Mulk. Read it tonight before sleeping. Just once. And then again tomorrow. After 21 days of consistency, the habit will be formed and, in sha Allah, your grave will have a protector.
