There is a day that comes once a year. A day so sacred that Allah Himself descends to the lowest heaven and speaks to the angels about the people on the plain of Arafah. A day when more people are freed from the Fire than on any other day. A day when duas are accepted with a certainty unlike any other time of the year.
That day is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah โ Youm-e-Arafa.
And the beautiful thing? You do not need to be standing on the plain of Arafah to benefit from it.
What Makes This Day So Special?
The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said about Youm-e-Arafa:
"There is no day on which Allah frees more of His slaves from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He comes close and then boasts about them to the angels, saying: 'What do these people want?'" โ (Muslim)
Read that again. Allah boasts about His servants to the angels. The Creator of the heavens and the earth looks at the people making dua and worship on this day, and He speaks about them with pride to the angels. What greater honour could there be?
And this is not just for the pilgrims on Arafah. The scholars say that the mercy and forgiveness of this day extends to every believing Muslim, wherever they are in the world.
The Best Dua to Make on Youm-e-Arafa
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"The best dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah." โ (Tirmidhi)
And then he taught us the specific dua to say on this day:
This is a dhikr that the Prophet ๏ทบ specifically recommended for this day. Say it hundreds of times โ in the morning, while cooking, while walking, before sleeping. Let it be the dominant words on your tongue on this blessed day.
Fast on This Day โ The Reward Is Extraordinary
The Prophet ๏ทบ was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He said:
"It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year." โ (Muslim)
Two full years of sins โ wiped away by one day of fasting. There is no other single fast in the Islamic calendar that carries this reward. Not the fasts of Muharram, not the fasts of Sha'ban. The fast of Arafah is unique.
Note: This fast is recommended for those who are NOT performing Hajj. Those on Hajj do not fast on this day as they need their strength for the standing on Arafah.
What to Do Throughout the Day
After Fajr: Begin Your Dhikr
Start the day with morning adhkar, then begin saying the dua of Arafah abundantly. Also say: Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulillah, Subhanallah, La ilaha illallah โ fill your morning with remembrance of Allah.
During the Day: Make Sincere Dua
Set aside time โ ideally between Dhuhr and Asr โ to make personal dua. Ask for everything. This is one of the greatest moments of dua acceptance in the entire year. Ask for forgiveness, for your family, for health, for the ummah. Do not hold back.
In the Afternoon: Read Quran
Spend time with the Quran. Read with understanding. Let the words of Allah fill your heart on the day when Allah is boasting about His servants.
At Maghrib: Say Takbeer
After Maghrib on the night of Eid, begin saying the Takbeer-e-Tashreeq: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil hamd.
For Those Who Cannot Fast
If you are unable to fast due to illness, travel, pregnancy, or any valid reason โ do not feel that you have missed out entirely. Increase your dhikr, your dua, your istighfar, and your Quran recitation. Allah sees every sincere effort. The day is blessed regardless, and your worship on this day carries a weight unlike ordinary days.
A Personal Reflection
While millions of pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafah physically, we have the opportunity to stand before Allah in our hearts โ in our homes, in our rooms, on our prayer mats. We may not be there in body, but we can be there in sincerity.
Make this Arafah count. Fast if you can. Fill the day with dhikr. Make the duas you have been postponing. Ask Allah to include you among those He frees from the Fire on this day.
He is listening. And on this day especially, He is close.
