There is a surah in the Quran that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically recommended for financial protection — and most Muslims have never heard this hadith.
Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night will never be afflicted by poverty." — (Bayhaqi, Ibn As-Sunni)
Every night. Never afflicted by poverty. This is not a vague promise — it is a specific, direct statement from the most truthful person who ever lived, about a specific practice that yields a specific result.
What Is Surah Al-Waqiah?
Surah Al-Waqiah is the 56th chapter of the Quran. Its name means "The Event" or "The Inevitable" — referring to the Day of Judgment. It contains 96 verses and is one of the Makkan surahs, revealed in the early period of Islam.
The surah is divided into three main parts. It opens by establishing that the Day of Judgment is inevitable and imminent. It then divides humanity into three groups: the Forerunners who will be closest to Allah, the Companions of the Right who will receive their record in their right hand, and the Companions of the Left who will face punishment. Finally, it closes with powerful verses about the creation and the signs of Allah's power.
Why Is This Surah Connected to Rizq?
The scholars have explained several reasons why this surah specifically carries protection from financial hardship.
It Reminds You of Who Controls Provision
The surah contains these profound verses:
"Have you seen the water you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who send it down? If We willed, We could make it bitter — then why are you not grateful?" — Surah Al-Waqiah (56:68-70)
And about food: "Have you seen what you sow? Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?" (56:63-64)
Every necessity of life — water, food, sustenance — comes directly from Allah. Reading this surah nightly is a constant reminder of this truth. And when you deeply believe that Allah is the Provider, your relationship with provision changes. Fear decreases. Gratitude increases. And gratitude, as Allah promises, leads to increase.
It Connects You to the Akhirah
Most financial anxiety comes from an excessive attachment to dunya. When you regularly recite a surah that vividly describes Jannah, the Day of Judgment, and the reality of what awaits after this life — your grip on worldly things loosens. And paradoxically, when you hold the dunya more lightly, Allah often gives you more of it.
The Three Groups on the Day of Judgment
Understanding the surah makes reciting it more meaningful. It describes three groups:
The Forerunners (As-Sabiqun)
These are the closest to Allah — the best of the believers in every generation. They will have the highest stations in Jannah. The surah describes their reward in extraordinary detail: gardens, flowing rivers, fruits of every kind, and — most importantly — peace.
The Companions of the Right (Ashab ul-Yameen)
These are the main body of believers who will receive their records in their right hands — a sign of success on that Day. Their reward is also beautiful, though distinct from the Forerunners.
The Companions of the Left (Ashab ul-Shimaal)
These are those who rejected faith and lived in heedlessness. The surah describes their regret and punishment in vivid terms — not to frighten without purpose, but to motivate change while there is still time.
How to Make This a Nightly Habit
The practice is simple: recite Surah Al-Waqiah once every night before sleeping. You can read it in Arabic from the Quran or from your phone. As you build familiarity with it, try reading with a translation open so the meaning settles in your heart alongside the words.
Start tonight. Before you put your phone down. Before you close your eyes. Read it once — just once — and trust the promise of the Prophet ﷺ.
He who promised was the most truthful person who ever lived. His promise is sufficient.
